All over the globe, the automobile is the dominant mode of personal transportation. Approximately nine of every ten people commute to work in a private motor vehicle. Public transportation is the means of transportation to work for more than 5% of the work force. More than 87% of households have a motor vehicle. Nearly two-third has two or more vehicle.
In early 1990’s, more than 1.72 trillion passenger-miles were traveled by car and truck. Automobile and truck usage accounted for more than 80.8% of intercity passenger-miles, and, when bus usage is added, the figure increases to 82%. Intercity motor carries of freight handled 29% of the freight ton-miles; While 37% was carried by railroad. Pipeline and inland waterways, respectively, accounted for 19% and 15% of the freight shipments.
Sales statistic for 1990’s, reflect popularity of small and midsize cars, which accounted for the five top-selling makes. However, the most notable trend was seen in the continued rapid rises of truck and MPV sales. Total sales of the top 5 pickup trucks, SUV, MPV and Minivan surpassed total sales of the top 5 automobile.
Characteristic of vehicle purchased are further describe by their optional equipment and accessories: engine, four cylinder (46%), six cylinder (39%), eight-cylinder ( 14%). Additional percentages include: automatic transmission (88%), power steering (93%), antilock brake (56%), air conditioning (99%), FWD accounted nearly 90% of the vehicle total.
